  • Cleaning

Cleaning is something that never ends. Today I cleaned out the brooders. Number five wanted nothing more than to help me out in his own two year old way. Which anyone knows that when they are “helping” in their way means more work for mom. After the brooders were rinsed out he ran inside. I thought he was finally bored and was going to give up on his part of “helping” me. He came back out with rag! He started drying the brooders with me. Mom win! LolπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ He was so proud of himself. #hobby #backyarding #kids #toddlerhelping #toddler #whentoddlershelptheymeanwell #whentoddlershelpmomishappyandsad #brooders #cleaning

  • Waste not

I give my quails and girls (chickens) oysters shells, they need calcium for the shells of the eggs. For the longest time I toyed around with the idea of giving them back the shells of their eggs. My first thought when this idea was introduced to me was … I don’t want to make an ” egg eater” that’s when the chickens egg their eggs sometimes they do this because they are missing something from their diet (some also think making an “egg eater is a myth) other times they might just be a dork. Doing more research on this I found that if you wash the egg shells first, letting the egg shells dry out, the breaking them up on to a baking sheet and baking for 10 mins at 250 degrees makes them easier to crush up into small bits. Some might tell you that they do this to kill bacteria and they might even bake them for longer time than what I do. I’m not worried about bacteria.

  • Fairy egg

I got my first fairy egg! I love that most of the quail are laying in the nesting box. Normally it is an egg hunt every day. I opened the nesting box and there it was just chilling with the other eggs.

I had to get photos of itπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

We did open it, the kids wanted to see if there was anything inside. I wanted to blow it out and save it but that wasn’t going to work. Only thing in it was just the egg white ( also called albumen or the glair/glaire) my kids were hoping for a tiny yolkπŸ˜‚ #hobby #backyarding #mygirls #pleaseshare #thanksforreading #chickens #quail #eggs #food #extraeggs #pleasefollow #fairyegg #firstone

  • Power out again!

The power is out where I live. Right before I was going to start cooking dinner too! At least I don’t have any chicks this time around πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚. On the other cool part I get to test out my new quail egg candles that I made. I wanted to wait until I had them set up and in a pretty holder but mother nature had other ideas. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.

  • Project 1 done, 1,000 more to goπŸ˜‚

I’ve been dabbling in lots of different projects but one that I have finished was making a pillow. The first photo is the front of the pillow.

I decided to use different fabrics for the front and back of this pillow. I do need to work more on my ladder stitch… but I don’t think it turned out too bad! #hobby #backyarding #sew #pillow #ladderstitch #pleaseshare #pleasefollow #thankyou #ladderstitichcanbehard

  • Fresh snow

Where I live we got a good amount of snow. It was beautiful to see all the snow.

But the girls (chickens) weren’t so happy about it. They are in their nesting boxes. When I opened it to check on them they clucking.

    I gave them some snow.. they weren’t impressed πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚. Talk about a cold shoulder ha ha πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ #mygirls #pleaseshare #pleasefollow #thankyouforreading #hobby #backyarding #chickens #snow #cold #atlesttheywentintothenestingboxtosleepsmartgirls #nosnowforyou #notimpressed

  • Deviled eggs

My husband asked if I would make some deviled eggs.

I made some out of quail eggs ( some of these eggs my daughter ate some before I had a chance to get them deviled πŸ˜‚) and chicken eggs.

    As you can see my presentation is not prettyπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ but you can see the difference in size for the quail eggs vs chicken eggs. #hobby #backyarding #mygirls #pleaseshare #pleasefollow #thankyou #eggs #food #dontneedtobeprettyforalatenightsnack #snack #backyarding #mygirls #quail #cuteandsmall #coturnix #celadongene #mydaughteratesome #chickens #mydaughteratesomeofmysnackforafterherandhersiblingsgotobed #littlepigs

  • Can you bug your chickens?

Today I was cleaning out my girls ( chickens) water containers. I stopped to let them air dry a little bit. Looked in to see Bella giving me this look and being noisy!

So can you bug your chickens? The answer is yes you can. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ When I laugh at her then she goes all silent and serious on me.

    πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I think she is plotting something πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚. #hobby #backyarding #mygirls #pleaseshare #thanksforreading #chickens #chook #fluffybutts #chickensarefun #Bella #pleasefollow #shedoesntwantmetocleanthingsoutrightnow #ohwell #cleanchickenisahappychicken #mombackyardlife

  • Egg envy

Got some beautiful photos of my eggs last night. I have to admit I love taking photos of my eggs. It’s a fun to combine hobbies. I love taking photos and I love the eggs I get from the girls ( chickens) and the quail. There are lots of people who take photos of their eggs.. its egg envy. You see those great colors of those eggs. Then you find yourself looking up the breed of chicken that lays that egg color. Next thing know…you find yourself thinking.. well now I need that breed. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ You will also find yourself trying to out do your last egg photo. #eggenvy

  • Productive day

Today after I was done doing school with our kids, my husband and I did some yard work. We also made a good amount of progress in cleaning out the garage. As we do every evening, we go do our checks on the girls (chickens) and the quail. Well, my quail hens made my night. I have someone carrying the celadon gene. I’m so excited! Hens who lay Celadon colored (blueish color) will lay them the rest of their life. You do need a male that carrys this gene also other wise the chances for off spring to carry on the gene are less.
